In March 2007, the FDA issued a black-box warning for erythropoiesis-stimulating agents. It is recommended that the lowest possible dose be used to help patients avoid blood transfusions. Studies have shown increased mortality and/or a tumor progression in patients with cancer receiving an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent.

OVERVIEW
Evidence suggests that blood transfusion and its complications can increase, and not reduce, a patient’s risk of serious morbidity and even mortality. Furthermore, unnecessary transfusion increase healthcare costs related to the collection, processing, storage, and administration of blood products, among other expenses. This module explains the rationale for screening and early detection based on broad consideration of the human and economic impacts of not doing so.
